Edge devices with Industrial Edge Runtime
Industrial Edge Runtime enables secure, local execution of any number of Edge applications on different Edge systems.
- Providing the integrated connectivity of Industrial Edge Runtime to systems at the field, control and IT/cloud level reduces the software implementation workload on the customer end as compared to conventional data processing solutions based on Linux and Windows.
- Based on the open container standard Docker, Edge applications can be scaled and run on a wide range of Edge devices after being programmed once. Furthermore, this allows software to be broken up into manageable units and these units to be updated, started and stopped in a dedicated manner – remotely for maximum convenience.
- An integrated databus on Industrial Edge Runtime based on MQTT enables secure and controlled app-to-app communication as well as data exchange between external systems and Edge apps. In this way, interface dependencies are elegantly resolved – after being programmed once, apps can be integrated in various domains and automation systems.
- The Edge devices are commissioned and configured via Industrial Edge Management.

Dedicated Edge devices with pre-installed Industrial Edge Runtime are supplied for the sole purpose of Edge-based data processing.

Edge-enabled automation systems
These devices offer native support of Industrial Edge Runtime in addition to their technological function. This enables high-performance data processing with short latency times, as well as functional expansion through apps. By onboarding the devices to the central management system, any number of devices can be administered centrally.
The SIMATIC HMI Unified Comfort Panels are the first device family to be supplied “Edge-enabled” as standard.
Licenses
For centralised management of distributed Edge devices and the Edge applications, additional usage fees are incurred per connected device in connection with Industrial Edge Management.
