SIMATIC EV Charging System

Charging the evolution of eMobility.

It is essential to understand that building and installing EV charger system goes beyond providing a charging point for electric vehicles. To maximise uptime and minimise losses, you need a holistic approach to the entire electrical infrastructure.

Overview

SIMATIC: The holistic approach for a successful EV charging infrastructure

Using Siemens modular approach, we begin with the transformer substation connection to the electrical grid. The load management system helps you stay within contract limitations with your power supplier and ensures that you deliver maximum power to your customers during the charging process. The optional microgrid application enables you to integrate on-site batteries or photovoltaic generation. The integrated asset management system helps reduce service costs and ensures seamless operation. Additionally, it maximises the lifespan of your EV charging infrastructure.

SIMATIC EV Charging key components

ET 200SP TM ECC 2xPWM ST

The essential module for your charging systems

The ET 200SP I/O system offers an ideal basis for meeting the technological requirements involved in the conductive charging of electric vehicles not only in industrial automation, but also the field of electromobility. Communication between the electric vehicle and the CPU installed in the charger infrastructure plays a major role here. The ET 200SP TM ECC 2xPWM ST hereby enables communication in accordance with charging mode 3 for two charging processes running independently of one another as defined in the IEC 61851 standard. It can be used within an ET 200SP station, both in centralised and distributed configurations, whereby the slots can be freely selected.

In addition to communication, the technology module takes over control of the connector lock for charging sockets type 2 in accordance with IEC 62196 and of the contactor for switching the charging capacity.

For demanding charging infrastructure solutions, the tasks of load management (Energy Meter), back-end and billing options (Open Controller), identification (RF1060R), illumination (e.g. TM Pulse) and back-end connection (PC) can be implemented within the SIMATIC ET 200SP in combination with additional modules and a corresponding CPU (e.g. SIMATIC ET 200SP Open Controller).

ET 200SP TM ECC 2xPWM ST

  • Detecting the charging cable and its permitted current carrying capacity
  • Transferring the maximum charging current from the charging station to the electric vehicle
  • Evaluating the status signals from the electric vehicle:
    • Ready for charging
    • Charging
    • Charging with ventilation
  • Control and status query of the load output
  • Control and status query of the connector lock by means of solenoid or motorised drive

Charging infrastructure solutions based on the new SIMATIC ET 200SP TM ECC offer the following advantages:

  • Space savings in the control cabinet compared to conventional solutions
  • Safe control of the charging processes
  • Modular expansion options directly at a CPU or as distributed I/O modules
  • Reduced downtimes via intelligent load management
    and load current control possibilities
  • RFID connection via communication module (RS485 / RS232)
  • Automatic detection of the cable’s current carrying
    capacity&secure shutdown on error detection
  • Full flexibility and adaptability for individual requirements
    and infrastructures
  • Direct backend connection

EV Charging solution with Standard Components

Multi-point EV Charging stations

This multi-charging system is build to be able to expand it over the time to deal with the increasing number of electrical vehicles. To ensure this property both hardware and software should be focused on modularity.

The Siemens hardware offers you to build up a modular charging system by adding some charging specific hardware like the charging plug.

The ET 200SP TM ECC 2xPWM ST is the essential module for your Siemens charging system. This module builds up the communication to the car and manage the behaviour of the lock among other things.

The Siemens Advantage

Why you should rely on Siemens Technology in your charging stations

We provide OEMs and system integrators with charging solution for electric vehicles including modern, programmable SIMATIC controllers, electrical components and application examples for AC and DC charging stations.

With only three charge control modules you will be able to charge with the different connector types according to latest international standards.

It is possible to realise charging stations of any size from single pillars to multi point charging with many charging sockets or plugs.

All automation task run on one single and performant device what eliminates redundant and risky interfaces.

The controller platform is ready for OCPP communication, Load Management and combinable with calibratable meter from 3rd-party vendor

To ease the engineering we offer the free-of-charge application examples.

SIRIUS and SENTRON ensure protection of the user and the car. Reliability is key in this context – especially as charging infrastructure is exposed to all kinds of weather conditions, electrical equipment needs to be robust and of high quality.
